Grendel "What If" Blog

I feel that Grendel should not have been pushed out to live in swamplands just because of his intriguing monster-like appearance. Many people think that he should be in the swamplands just because of his looks. They not this of the long term affects that it might have on him. What is your opinion? Answer my poll on the right hand sidebar.

Do you think Grendel was evil before he was an outcast? Or did the situation cause him to turn evil?

What if Grendel would have lived in the city of Denmark under the rule of King Hrothgar? Would he have been accepted because of his appearance? or his actions?

What if Grendel had not looked like a monster, but was still evil? Would he have been a outcast?

What if Grendel still looked like a monster, but was not evil? Would he have been accepted by the Dane? Could he have possible be a soldier helping Beowulf fight the Fire Breathing Dragon?

What If Beowulf would have never came because Grendel was not a threat and Beowulf would not be in Denmark to fight the Fire Breathing Dragon? Would the whole kingdom have died?

Think about these "what if" questions. I look forward to reading your comments on my blog.

The face of CAIN

I, Grendel, am one of the three monsters in the epic poem Beowulf. My character represents Cain (devil or evil). I have the appearance of a monster, but have human emotions and feelings. I feel like an outcast due to this monster-like appearance. I have been forced out of human society and live in the swampland. I am very jealous of the human society. I want badly to be accepted in human society. My main purpose in life is revenge on the human society, especially he Danes.

King Hrothgar is the leader of the Dane people. He wants his people to like him so he builds a great mead-hall where his soldiers can meet and eat. The noise from the gatherings makes me furious and I want more revenge than before. I am getting my revenge by killing the Dane soldiers in their sleep. I attack the Danes every night, killing a handful of of them each day. The Danes live in fear of ME and King Hrothgar feels they are unhappy with him.

The news of my attacks and the unhappy Danes is sweeping the land. I hear that, Beowulf, a young soldier of the Geats, has heard of me and has traveled to Denmark with a small company of the Geats best soldiers to save the Danes.

I (the editor) feel that King Hrothgar should have done something after the first couple of attacks against his people. He should not have let the killings go on as long as they did.

The Fight

Beowulf arrived today and offered to King Hrothgar to defeat me, the mighty Grendel, and save his people. The main reason Beowulf decides to come to Denmark is that King Hrothgar had once done a favor for Beowulf’s father. Beowulf is repaying the favor.
The day did not go as I had planned.

King Hrothgar came up with a great plan to help Beowulf defeat me. He decides to throw a great feast in his mead-hall which he knows, always attracts me and makes me very angry. The soldiers got especially loud tonight because they thought that they are close to having me defeated and their worry and fears will soon be over. The other part of King Hrothgar’s plan was to have all the soldiers sleep in the mead-hall so they’d all be there when I attacked.

Late tonight, after the feast, I went to seek more revenge. Little did I know, this would be the night of my death. I attacked one soldier as usual, but this time Beowulf was asleep amongst the soldiers. When I tried to attack Beowulf, Beowulf reacted with unhumanlike strength and determination. We fight and in the end Beowulf rips off my arm. I return to the swampland defeated. The soldiers are not sure if I am dead or not. I don't think I can hang on much longer.

The END of Grendal

I'm telling the story now from my grave. I have been defeated by the mighty Beowulf.

This morning the soldiers think their sorrows are over due to Beowulf ripping off my arm. They get up and follow my blood trail back down to my outcast swamplands. The blood trial stops and my body was not to be found. This makes the soldiers panic. Even from my grave, I still am causing fear!

Tonight my Mother comes goes seek revenge on the death of her only son. She sneaks into Hereot to seek her revenge. She kills one of King Hrothgar most trusted adviser named Aeschere. Beowulf must then go after my mother before she begins to terroize and kill the people like I did. Beowulf tracks her to the swampland and fights her in her underwater lair. The fight goes on and Beowulf starts to struggle. He feels defeated until he spots a giant sword. He uses his unhumanlike strength to lift the sword and kills my mother by a sword sling to the head.
During the travel back to Hereot, Beowulf discovers my corpse near the end of the blood trail. He cuts off the my head and takes it back to King Hrothgar to prove that I am dead. The king and his people rejoice knowing that they are free of me and my terror.
